I note with interest former Virginia Beach schools Superintendent Sidney L. Faucette's disclaimer for responsibility concerning that school system's $12.1 million deficit based on being ``out of the loop'' on the budget process.
This ties in nicely with similar disclaimers announced recently by three former directors of the Central Intelligence Agency concerning appalling activities newly unearthed which had occurred during their periods in office. Similar statements have been released in recent years by senior officials and executives under similar circumstances.
I find that it helps to place such statements in proper perspective by translating them as follows: ``I was in a senior position of authority and responsibility and was extremely well-paid to oversee the organization under my authority. Nevertheless, I did not pay attention to what was going on in that organization.''
