Billy J. Seabolt's lament (letter, Nov. 19) that it's time to ``get rid of that party-buster, John Warner'' because he has split the Republican Party is not convincing.
Warner obviously had a different opinion from Seabolt about certain Republican candidates such as convicted felon Oliver North and right-wing ideologue Mike Farris. And to Warner's credit, he had the courage to stand up, along with the majority of Virginia voters, to oppose those he felt unfit for high political office. Warner is now paying the price for political disagreement.
As George Will so brilliantly expressed it in ``Train wreck is democracy at work'' (Perspectives, Nov. 20), disagreement is what democracy is all about.
I believe Seabolt is far off the mark when he says that Republicans will gain control of the House of Delegates and the Senate when they get rid of Warner. On the contrary, I believe the Republican Party (of which I am a lifelong member) will take control when it fields outstanding candidates as much like Warner as possible.
