Recently, my daughter and I and my two grandchildren were involved in a car accident in Portsmouth. The car was demolished and we were very lucky to escape injury. We all were upset, naturally, and being fairly new in the area we didn't know anyone well enough to call and ask to come and take us home.
The officer on duty, Officer Roxanne Hutt, was most helpful and understanding and did all she could to help us. She contacted her supervisor, Sgt. Robert Pond, and he gave her permission to transport us to our home in Suffolk.
We just want to thank the Portsmouth Police Department, especially Officer Hutt and Sgt. Pond for taking that extra step in getting us all home, safe and sound.

Nov. 29, 1995 Girls Inc. a `standout'
Girls Inc. is a ``Standout Good Guy'' among the list of best charities to receive your donations, according to the Dec. 4 issue of U.S. News and World Report's article: ``How to Pick the Best Charities - A Guide to Giving.'' Girls Inc. was among five organizations cited for being ``uniquely effective, innovative and valuable.''
Girls Inc. for Youth (formerly Girls Club of Portsmouth) has been meeting the developmental needs of boys, as well as girls, within Portsmouth and the Deep Creek and Western Branch areas of Chesapeake for the past 37 years. The Center for Youth is an affiliate of the national organization Girls Inc. and a member agency of the United Way of South Hampton Roads. The needs of its members have changed over the years while its facilities have remained the same.
It promises to be a very exciting year for Girls Inc. Center for Youth as we construct the new facility and plan to expand a Portsmouth tradition of excellence extending back 37 years. Girls Inc. Center for Youth has provided a safe and educational environment for thousands of youth over the years. Our organization is indeed one of the ``standout good guys'' and a donation to our capital campaign guarantees an investment for our youth.

Dec. 4, 1995 Fast response saved life
I am writing in regard to some of Portsmouth's finest: J.B. Spicer, S.W. Wilder, G.E. Lassiter and P.C. Edwards, engine firefighters from the Cedar Lane division. Also, ambulance attendants Ty Drylie and Robert Lee.
These firefighters and ambulance attendants responded to a 911 call Nov. 9 as my husband had severe chest pain. They were at my home in four minutes and by that time he was unconscious. When they got him stabilized he was taken to Maryview Medical Center and then transferred to Norfolk General. Ten days later we brought him home and he will be returning to Norfolk General for more surgery.
Saying thank you to these men seemed so small, for without their expert training my husband would not be here today. I know sometimes over the years we have become discouraged with how some of our leaders run Portsmouth, but you can rest assured we have some of the finest in the Portsmouth Fire Department.
May God bless them and their families. Because of them my husband can spend many more years with his children and grandchildren.
