A new license plate will be available for bowlers in the state - maybe.
The Virginia State Women's Bowling Association thought it had cleared all the hurdles when it received approval from the state legislature to have a license plate especially for bowlers.
The plate has VIRGINIA at the top of the tag, BOWLERS at the bottom and a bowling ball and pin displayed prominently (see drawing on this page).
But. . . .
There was a stipulation that 350 bowlers would have to apply for the tags before they will be marketed.
``At this moment we have approximately 190 applications,'' said Dee Pouttu, president of the VSWBA. ``We simply have been unable to let enough bowlers know about this. We know we will get the bowlers' support when the word gets to them.''
So here's the word: To get the plates on the road, bowlers should contact Pouttu in Chesapeake (420-8102) or write to the women's state association at Rt. 4, Box 479 in Moneta, Va., 24121. The fax number at the VSWBA is (703) 297-3482 and the telephone number is (703) 297-3480.
``This is a great and inexpensive way to promote our sport,'' said Pouttu. ``If we don't reach our quota of 350 soon, there will be no specialty license plates for bowlers.''
So let's get the orders in.
Virginia is for Bowlers.
Bowler of the Week honors go to three members of the Pinbusters Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Military.
Three of the Pinbusters went down to the last frame in bids for 300 games as Larry Martinez fired 299, John Howe hit 298 and Ellis Ivy shot 298.
Martinez has raised his average to a sparkling 224. He had a 738 series. Ivy rolled 698 and Howe closed with 696. Ivy had a 300 game in this league earlier.
