VICK, WILLIAMS TOP ALL-REGION SELECTIONS

Franklin's Mandi Vick and Nansemond River's Joycelyn Williams were first team selections on the All-Region I and All-Bay Rivers girls basketball teams.

Vick, who scored 16.2 points per game, was also named Bay Rivers District Player of the Year.

``Mandi was definitely one of the outstanding players (at Franklin),'' Broncos coach Mona Sumblim said. ``Obviously, she's been an asset because she carried our team offensively.''

The 6-foot senior finished her career with 1,096 points.

Williams, a sophomore, averaged 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals per game for an 18-6 Warriors team.

``As a sophomore starter having those stats, she's done a lot,'' Nansemond River coach Sandra McCray said of Williams, who moved from shooting guard to point guard this season. ``The girls looked to her to run the offense and to score.''

York's Heather Tomlison and Bruton's Rhonda Ellis and Natasha Burnet rounded out the All-Bay Rivers first team. Brunswick's Lakesha Thompson, Park View's Raketta Jones and Greensville's Qantel Bullock were the other first team All-Region selections.

The All-Bay Rivers second team included Jannie Porter of Nansemond River, Nikesha Houston of York, Jennifer Davidson of Poquoson, Maria Barnette of Franklin and Cherica Taylor of Southampton. Honorable mention all-district picks from Western Tidewater included Tekneka Brown of Southampton, Deshawn Lee of Franklin, Amy Patterson of Nansemond River, Rebecca Demmiel of Lakeland, Cherri Phillips of Lakeland and Robin Hall of Southampton.
