Chesapeake City Council had little choice but to vote to allow the commercial development of the historic property at Cedar Road and Battlefield Boulevard. Herman A. Hall, the property owner, made it very clear that if the city did not approve the development plan for a drive-through bank and a pharmacy, he would build a strip shopping center. This is nothing more than blackmail.
The city's offer to buy the property for $1.2 million was more than fair. Mr. Hall should have accepted it.
We certainly don't need another bank, pharmacy or strip shopping center at this busy intersection. A public park at this corner would break up mile after mile of commercial development along Battlefield Boulevard.
I, for one, will boycott any commercial business that is developed on this site. Mr. Hall would do well to reconsider the city's offer, since a boycott would have serious negative impact on the value of this property.
As a matter of fact, $1.2 million is looking better all the time. How about it, Mr. Hall?
