11TH CASE OF RABIES THIS YEAR REPORTED IN LITTLE NECK AREA

Another confirmed case of rabies has been reported in Virginia Beach.

The city's Health Department was notified Dec. 5 that a raccoon tested positive for rabies in the Little Neck area. It marks the 11th confirmed case this year in the city and the 39th since the first rabid animal was reported in 1992.

This latest incident involved two pet dogs that fought with a raccoon on Quail Run Quay in the Quail Run neighborhood that juts into the Eastern Branch of the Lynnhaven River.

The dogs involved were protected with current rabies vaccinations and will be confined for 90 days for observation.

Dr. Suzanne Dandoy, the city's health director, advises Virginia Beach residents and visitors to take the following steps to prevent families and pets from becoming exposed to rabies:

Confine your pets to your property.

Ensure all pet dogs and cats have a current rabies vaccination.

Do not approach wild or stray animals, especially raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks and cats.

Report all animal bites to the Animal Control Bureau at 427-5616 or the Health Department at 491-5940. by CNB
