ISLE OF WIGHT NAMES PHYSICIAN CITIZEN OF YEAR

Dr. Bernard Jamison, who came from his native Northern Ireland and opened a medical practice in the small town of Smithfield more than 30 years ago, was named Isle of Wight County's Citizen of the Year for 1995 at a dinner in his honor Tuesday evening.

Jamison, 66, was recognized for his dedication to the people of the community and for his efforts to bring modern medical services to rural Virginia.

``Doctor Barney Jamison has touched the lives of people throughout the county,'' 64th District Del. William K. Barlow said at the award presentation. ``Providing medical services to his patients is his first love.''

Jamison's practice eventually grew into the Smithfield Medical Clinic, with seven doctors practicing and an eighth expected to join the staff in January.

He has served on the staff of three hospitals: Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk, which recently acquired the clinic, and Riverside and Mary Immaculate on the Peninsula. He also has served as president of the medical staff at Obici and as president of the Tri-County Medical Society.

Jamison was born in Belfast. He attended schools in Belfast and Dublin and graduated from Queen's University Medical School at Belfast. He completed internships at Belfast City Hospital and the Royal Maternity Hospital.

He practiced in Belfast with his father, also a physician, from 1956 to 1958. After a trip to the United States in 1958, he moved to Smithfield in 1961.

``By the time he returned to Belfast, he had decided to move to the United States to live and work,'' Barlow said.

The annual award is sponsored jointly by the Smithfield Ruritan and Smithfield Rotary clubs. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
