A Virginia Beach developer has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for income tax evasion.
F. Patrick Kavanaugh, 62, pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in July. He was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court.
Kavanaugh attempted to avoid paying a large part of his income tax owed between 1974 and 1988 by concealing his assets and making and filing false tax statements, court records said.
When Kavanaugh learned he was under investigation by the IRS, he then filed amended personal tax returns in 1986 and 1987, court records said. He owed a total of $2.3 million - including penalties and interest - for 1974 through 1993, prosecutors said.
