The U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay of execution Wednesday to Coleman Wayne Gray, who was to be put to death tonight for robbing and murdering a Suffolk store manager.
The court also set a Jan. 5 conference to decide whether to hear Gray's appeal, said Don Harrison, a spokesman for the state attorney general's office.
Gray was convicted in Suffolk Circuit Court of the 1985 robbery and murder of a store manager who had recently fired Gray's wife. Gray shot Richard McClelland six times in the head and set his car on fire.
