INDIAN RIVER PLACES 4 PLAYERS ON FIRST TEAM WESTERN BRANCH, UNDEFEATED IN REGULAR SEASON PLAY, PUT THREE ON THE FIRST TEAM.

STATE SEMIFINALIST Indian River led the first team with four selections, two of them repeaters, in 1995 All-Southeastern District girls volleyball.

The team was picked by district coaches.

Defensive specialist Maria Astudillo, a senior, and junior middle hitter Quiana White return as first-team selections for the Braves, who bowed out of the state tournament in the first round against Patrick Henry of Roanoke.

Joining Astudillo and White are teammates Linda Johannison, a senior exchange student who earned a selection as a setter, and junior middle hitter Jennifer Burns, who earned honorable mention honors in 1994.

Western Branch, which notched an undefeated regular season, placed three players on the first team. Two were repeat selections - Katie MacPhail, a senior middle hitter, and senior Amanda Adkins, an outside hitter. Junior Cathy Arnette improved from an honorable mention pick last year to a first-team setter in 1995.

Great Bridge senior Jill Ferguson makes a repeat appearance as a first-team outside hitter. Ferguson led the Wildcats in aces (44), kills (93) and service attempts (131).

Heather Niedermeier, a sophomore at Deep Creek who didn't even make honorable mention last year, vaulted onto the first team at outside hitter.

On the second team, the Bruins led with three selections. Senior outside hitter Jaci Morris moved down from last year's top squad, and senior Holly Savedge, a defensive specialist, and junior Tiffani Sykes, middle hitter, made their first appearances among district honorees.

Indian River seniors Latisha Grevious, middle hitter, and Elizabeth Morgan, outside hitter, repeated as second-team selections.

Two Deep Creek players moved up to the second team after receiving honorable mention distinction in 1994. Senior Stacie Watson was chosen at outside hitter; junior Glenda Brinson repeated as a setter.

Rounding out the second team are two players from Great Bridge that made their debut on the district honor roll - junior Anna Oliver, setter, and senior Crystal Lassiter, outside hitter. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
