$21.5 MILLION IS RAISED FOR ENDOWMENT AT EVMS

Eastern Virginia Medical School has raised $21.5 million so far in its ongoing effort to build the school's endowment, school officials said this week.

The school has just finished the second year of a five-year campaign that hopes to raise $62 million.

EVMS got two major boosts in that effort this year. Sentara Health System this summer donated $1 million to endow a chair of generalist medicine.

And just two weeks ago, the school announced that Virginia Beach resident Virginia Glennan Ferguson agreed to give $2 million to create the Glennan Center for Geriatrics, which will be named in honor of her grandfather and father.

In addition to creating the geriatric center and building the school's endowment, campaign organizers are trying to find funds to support programs on biomedical research, medical ethics and generalist medicine.

Officials hope to give the campaign a boost by naming four people who helped found the school 22 years ago to serve as honorary chairmen: Charles F. Burroughs Jr., Henry Clay Hofheimer II, Harry H. Mansbach and Dr. Robert Lee Payne Jr.

The private school also relies on some support from the state and most Hampton Roads cities. by CNB
