Two Hampton Roads high school seniors were named Friday as winners of the Harry F. Byrd Jr. Leadership Award.
Candace Jackson of Maury High School in Norfolk and Marie Anne Sankaran of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk were among 11 students named in Richmond.
They received their $2,500 scholarship checks from Byrd and Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harry Carrico, chairman of the trustees for the $1 million endowment fund established in 1994 by the former U.S. senator.
The winners, one from each of the state's 11 congressional districts, were chosen for their academic achievement, character, leadership and devotion to duty. by CNB
