AFTER THE KIND of season the Cox field hockey team had, it should come as no surprise that the Falcons dominated the balloting for the All-Beach District team as selected by the coaches.
And it shouldn't be startling that Bayside - last year's state runner-up and state quarterfinalist this fall - was right behind.
Cox - which won a national record seventh-straight state title and record-tying 10th overall - placed five starters on the first team and two on the second.
Bayside, which lost only to Cox until a quarterfinal loss to Lake Braddock, placed three on the first team and two on the second.
Including honorable mention selections, both squads finished with nine of their 11 starters making the rosters.
It is also only fitting that the coaches voted Falcons forward Kim Miller as the player of the year. Marlins coach Kathy Mustain and Kellam's Holly Richbourg shared coach of the year honors.
Miller - one of only two first-team repeaters - finished her high school career by breaking her own Group AAA single season and career scoring marks with 63 goals and 160 in four years. Both rank third all-time nationally. Miller, a member of the junior national team, also registered 15 assists this season.
Falcons teammates joining Miller are seniors Robin Dwyer, Kim Iman and Catherine McCallum, and junior Katie McDonald. Iman and McCallum made last year's second team.
Playing in the midfield position, Dwyer scored eight goals and had nine assists while serving as the flyer in defensive penalty corner situations. She also scored a 1,580 on her SATs and will attend Princeton University in the fall.
McCallum finished the season tied for first in a single season with 33 assists. She is second nationally career-wise with 58. Both marks are first in the state. McCallum scored goals in a pair of 1-0 victories in the state tournament - the second coming in an overtime win over Lake Braddock for the title.
Iman, a three-year keeper, is also in the record books with 54 career shutouts - good enough for second. She ranks third nationally with 13 consecutive shutouts. Both are state records.
McDonald came on strong towards the end of the season and finished with 24 goals and 17 assists. She will likely step into Miller's ``big gun'' role next season.
Bayside's Dawn Bell is the other first-team repeater and led the Marlins with 24 goals and nine assists from her midfield position. Teammates Angie Hebron and Kay Anderson - the only other junior on the first team - join her on the first team. Both were second-teamers last year. Hebron had six goals and 16 assists. Anderson had 10 goals and five assists.
Rounding out the first team are seniors Amanda Mickiewicz of Kellam, Lesley St. Denis of Kempsville and Naomi Muha of Tallwood.
Mickiewicz - a midfielder - had two goals and one assist.
Muha - a forward - moved up to the first team after being on the second squad for the past two seasons. She finished with eight goals and three assists.
No information on St. Denis - a forward - was provided. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
