WILLIAM C. OVERTON

Rev. William Charlie Overton, 83, of the 800 block of Academy St., died Dec. 16, 1995, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, N.C., after a brief illness.

Rev. Overton was born in Hertford County and served as pastor of Mount Zion Free Will Baptist Church, Roper, N.C., where he was in his 34th year as its pastor when he was taken ill. He also pastored several other churches during his ministry. Rev. Overton had also served as superintendent of Sunday school, a teacher, and as a deacon at the Hickory Chapel Free Will Baptist Church of the Hickory Chapel community of Ahoskie. Charlie Overton was awarded ``Mr. Woodmen'' Award for the year of 1990. He was awarded an appreciation plaque in December of 1988 for 44 years of service on the Ordination Board of the Albemarle Conference. Also in 1988, the William Charlie Overton Endowment Fund was established in his honor for his devoted service as an ordained minister.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Wiggins Overton; daughter, Barbara O. Rieth of Queenstown, Md.; son, Charles W. Overton of Raleigh; sister, Thelma Smith of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Karl Rieth Jr. of Queenstown, Lori Schneider of Crystal Lake, Ill., Margaret O. Spears, and Kathryn O. Wright, both of Raleigh; three great-grandchildren, Ben Schneider of Crystal Lake, Amanda Spears, and Bradley Wright of Raleigh.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by Dr. Burkette Raper, the Rev. Robert May, and Dr. Jesse Croom. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at the home.
