Jay Wilson Smith Sr., 84, of the 600 block of W. Main St., died Dec. 16, 1995, in Guardian Care Nursing Home, Scotland Neck, N.C.
He was retired from N.C. Department of Transportation where he was an equipment department supervisor for 37 years. He was a native of Northampton County, N.C. and a member of Meherrin Baptist Church, Murfreesboro. He was also a member of Potecasi Creek Hunt Club.
He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Hall Smith; four daughters, Joanne Schell of Corapolis, Pa., Kathryn Howell of Greensboro, N.C., Lynn Pope of Durham, N.C., and Jewel Johnson of Murfreesboro; two sons, Jay Wilson Smith Jr. of Nashville, N.C., Al H. Smith of Murfreesboro; sister, Verna Bracey of Rich Square, N.C.; brother, Louis Smith of Boykins, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Billy Sellers in Meherrin Baptist Church. Burial is in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the Murfreesboro Rescue Squad, or to the Meherrin Baptist Church Elevator Fund.
