STICK'S HISTORY REPRINTED

A popular history of Dare County, out of print since 1991, has been reprinted by the Historical Publications Section of the N.C. Division of Archives and History. The fifth printing of ``Dare County: A Brief History'' has a cover that features a photograph of the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Author David Stick of Kill Devil Hills describes coastal Dare County as ``. pirates, history and sand - mostly sand. Its story is the story of the beginning of America, the beginning of North Carolina, the beginning of the age of flight.''

Although the first English attempt at colonization in North America was made there in the 1580s, Dare County was not formed until 1870. The county's borders contain an area nearly as large as the state of Rhode Island; however, in terms of land area, Dare is one of North Carolina's smallest counties.

Stick's history of Dare County first appeared in 1970 and has been reprinted three times previously. The 64-page paperback contains 17 sections that present a chronological and topical overview of the county's history from the 1580s to the latter half of the twentieth century.

``Dare County: A Brief History'' costs $6 plus $3 for shipping. Order from: Historical Publications Section (N), Division of Archives and History, 109 E. Jones St., Raleigh, N.C. 27601-2807. by CNB
