CRIME LINE

Local police are asking public assistance in solving these cases:

CHESAPEAKE

Early on the morning of Dec. 4, a woman's vehicle broke down near the intersection of Elbow Road and Centerville Turnpike.

A man stopped under the pretense of offering help, then assaulted the woman and to rape her. A passing citizen stopped to assist and scared the assailant away.

The citizen left before the woman could thank him or get his name.

Chesapeake police are asking the good Samaritan to come forward and assist in the investigation of this crime. Police also are asking that anyone who traveled in that area around 12:30 a.m., and who may have seen the suspect, call.

The suspect is described as white, in his 40s, 5 feet 5 inches tall, with a thin build and brown hair. He was driving a large, older-model vehicle.

NORFOLK

On Sept. 27, at 6:30 a.m., police and paramedics were called to 1200 block of Hillside Ave. where they discovered the body of John Allen Kyles, 21.

Kyles was killed, but for investigative reasons, police are withholding the cause of death.

Kyles grew up in Hampton Roads and was a 1992 graduate of Norview High School.

He was last seen - four hours before his body was found - leaving the Super 8 Motel in the 7900 block of Shore Drive. He was driving a red Pontiac Firebird.

PORTSMOUTH

On Sunday, Dec. 3, about 8 p.m., a man entered the Sentry Food Mart in the 4700 block of Portsmouth Blvd. and pointed a chrome-plated handgun at a clerk.

The suspect demanded money from the cash register and told the clerk he would ``blow her head off'' if she did not comply. After taking the money, the suspect demanded two packs of Newport cigarettes and then fled the store.

The suspect was last seen getting into a four-door, dark blue Cadillac, occupied by another man. The vehicle was parked across the street in the Bethany Church parking lot.

The suspect with the gun is described as black, about 30 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, about 160 pounds with dirty or brown looking teeth. He was wearing a dark blue jacket, blue work pants and a dark toboggan cap.

VIRGINIA BEACH

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, about 2 a.m., a 22-year-old woman was awakened by a man in her apartment bedroom. He sexually assaulted her and left through the front door.

The attack occurred in the 200 block of South Budding Ave., in the Woodshire Apartment complex.

The suspect is described as black, in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall, 165 pounds, with a medium build. He had short black hair with some gray hair and a slight mustache. He was wearing a brown jacket and a brown and tan baseball cap.

SUFFOLK

On Nov. 11, thieves went to a stable in the 9000 block of South Quay Road and tried to steal two horses.

One of the horses was struck in the head with a sharp object, possibly an axe, and suffered a skull fracture.

Investigators believe this incident may be related to rustlers who steal and sell horses for meat.

HAMPTON

On Nov. 28, within one hour, two businesses were robbed by the same man.

The first incident occurred at Shoney's in the 1500 block of W. Pembroke Ave. just after 9 p.m. The second was Movie Time in the 4000 block W. Mercury Blvd.

In each case, the robber, armed with a handgun, entered the business and demanded money from the clerk.

The suspect is described as black, about 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall with a dark complexion. He was wearing black pants, a dark blue sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head and a blue and white bandanna concealing his face.

On Dec. 11, about 6:40 a.m., a 14-year-old girl was walking to a school bus stop when she was assaulted.

The victim was walking on the south side of the 900 block of 25th St. at the time of the attack.

She said she had passed a man who later turned around and grabbed her by covering her mouth with his hand. The victim was able to escape with the assistance of a witness who pushed the man away from her.

The suspect is described as black, in his late 20s to mid 35s, 135 to 140 pounds, with a mustache and light skin. He had what appeared to be a small scar with a scab approximately 1/4-inch in diameter on the right side of his mouth. He had a slim build and was wearing dark clothing and a dark hat.

Police have increased patrols and surveillance of bus routes in the Southeast Community. Still, 30 to 40 high school-aged children walk alone each morning to bus stops in the area.

As a key safety measure, police urge that students of all ages walk in groups. Any suspicious activity should be reported to police immediately.

Police, along with citizen volunteers from the Minute Men, Crime Watch groups and other volunteers, are available to escort students as needed. Those wishing to utilize this service should contact their school principal. ILLUSTRATION: Drawings
