FATHER-TO-BE PHELPS IS PACKED AND READY, WAITING FOR THE CALL

Hampton Roads defenseman Chris Phelps will become a father any day now, a blessed event he says he can't wait to experience.

Problem is, he's on the road with the Admirals, and his wife, Dawn, is back home in Ottawa. Dawn was due to give birth Friday.

``The doctors say she's going to go any day,'' Phelps said.

So will Phelps. He came to Raleigh with a cellular phone and an extra suitcase of clothes, which he will carry with him today to South Carolina. When he gets the word from his wife, he'll be on the first fight to Ottawa.

``I'll be there,'' Phelps said. ``The thing I've been concerned about is not worrying about Dawn. I've wanted to stay focused on hockey, and with the Lord's help, I've been able to do that.''

How does John Brophy, an old-school coach, feel about one of his stars leaving for several days on personal business?

``At first he told me not to even think of asking to leave,'' Phelps said. ``But then I said to him, `Coach, will you allow me to witness the birth of my first child?'

``He told me since I put it that way, he couldn't say no.''

EXPENSIVE TOSS: Richmond's Trevor Senn drew a five-game suspension from ECHL commissioner Pat Kelly after throwing a stick into the Richmond Coliseum stands last Tuesday during a Renegades victory over South Carolina.

Senn tossed the stick in anger after being given a game misconduct for slashing. Senn, who leads the ECHL with 252 penalty minutes, was lucky it wasn't more severe. A fan skillfully snagged the stick in midair before it hit nearby fans.

Senn will become eligible to play again against the Admirals Dec. 27 at Scope.

AROUND THE ECHL: Johnstown's Trevor Jobe, a former Admiral, was named ECHL player of the month for November. Jobe had 14 goals and nine assists in 11 games and on Nov. 10 became the ECHL's career scoring leader with 533 points. He surpassed the record held by Phil Berger, the former Greensboro star. . . Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Waterside to raise money for the March of Dimes. Admirals Booster Club members will make calls to area businesses to raise ``bail'' for the players, who will sign autographs while incarcerated. . . . Nancy Brophy-White, the wife of John Brophy, and Kowalsky will be the guests at 3 p.m. today on the ``Off-Sides'' hockey show on Cox Cable Channel 11. The show is hosted by former Admirals forward Brendan Curley. by CNB
