MARVIN COOPER

Mr. Marvin Cooper was laid to rest Saturday, Dec. 16, 1995, in Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Gum Neck, N.C. He died at home Monday, Dec. 11, 1995, after an extended battle with cancer.

Mr. Cooper, 46, a native of Gum Neck, a community near Columbia, was a former Tyrrell County Commissioner and had served as a firefighter and emergency medical technician for the community volunteer fire department. He was honored twice as Fireman of the Year by the County Commission. The annual award goes to the year's volunteer chief. He had been a 30-year employee of Durwood Cooper Farms.

His survivors include his wife, Marita Basnight Cooper and son, Marvin (TeeCee) Cooper, both of the home; two daughters, Glenna Hicks of Norfolk, Va., and Lavonia Travette Burris of Fairfield, N.C.; a granddaughter, Karita Hicks of Norfolk.

He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Bertha Smith and Willie Smith of Norfolk, Va.; six sisters, Sharon Smith of Norfolk, LaVerne Smith and Janice Smith, both of Virginia Beach, Tammie Smith of Nashville, Tenn., Quentilla Littlejohn of Hampton, Va., and Yvonne Whitney of Fairfield; two brothers, Willie F. Smith of Burlington, N.C., and Allen Cooper of Detroit.

Other survivors include mother-in-law, Nora Basnight of Columbia; grandfather, Willie Cooper of Columbia; son-in-law, Reginald Hicks of Norfolk; nine sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and some very dear friends, including, Calvin Barrow, Terry Bowser, Durwood Cooper and his family, Buddy, Blaine, Chris, Ronnie, Steine, David, Ray and the rest of his coworkers.
