The Town Council of Jarratt approved a zoning permit Monday for a 1-mile portion of the proposed Lake Gaston pipeline, a Virginia Beach official said.
Eight years ago, the council gave Virginia Beach permission to run the pipeline along a Beach-owned railroad right of way in the town, just north of Emporia.
But Virginia Beach waited until now to ask for the six-month conditional use permit, because the city had not received federal permits.
This fall, Virginia Beach received the final permit, and is prepared to begin building the 76-mile pipeline early next year.
Last week, the Isle of Wight County Planning Commission denied a similar zoning permit request.
The County Commission there is set to discuss the request in January.
The pipeline would bring water from Lake Gaston, on the North Carolina border, to Hampton Roads. by CNB
