TWO WOMEN INJURED WHEN CAR IS STRUCK BY VAN FLEEING POLICE THEY'RE IN STABLE CONDITION; DRIVER OF VAN IS CHARGED.

Two women were injured Monday evening when their car was struck by a van that police were pursuing, police spokesman Larry Hill said.

The incident began just after 6 p.m. when Officer T. Infantino attempted to stop a 1989 Ford Aerostar traveling the wrong way on Mapleton Avenue, a one-way street.

Instead of pulling over, the driver fled, Hill said.

The pursuit lasted four to five minutes, heading from Mapleton toward Monticello Avenue, Hill said. Speeds ranged between 40 and 45 mph.

The van crashed into a 1994 Honda Accord heading north on Monticello Avenue near 29th Street.

The driver of the Honda, Angela McKinney of Baltimore, and her sister, Sharon Gregory of Norfolk, were trapped for a short time in the car and were rescued by Norfolk Fire and Paramedical Services personnel.

Gregory, 33, and McKinney suffered head injuries and were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, Hill said.

The driver of the van, 18-year-old Ali Nixon of Fort Worth Avenue, was charged with felony evasion, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and driving with a suspended driver's license.
