A New Jersey philanthropist will announce a $10 million gift to the College of William and Mary at a news conference today, two sources at the college said late Monday.
Jack Borgenicht, who already has given William and Mary $1.3 million to promote peace studies, has been in negotiations with college officials for several weeks over the $10 million donation.
``We've known the amount definitively for a few days,'' said one source close to the negotiations, who asked to remain anonymous until the official announcement.
Borgenicht is expected to direct a substantial part of the money toward the Wendy and Emery Reves Center for International Studies. It was not clear Monday whether the donation would be a one-time or incremental gift. The possibility of a multimillion-dollar donation has been a hot topic in the college community since Borgenicht visited the Reves Center on Nov. 28 for an international peace symposium and met the center's founder, Wendy Reves.
At that visit, Reves hinted in an interview with the Daily Press that Borgenicht would make a donation far exceeding her own 1989 gift of $3 million. ``They love me here, but they're going to love him even more,'' Reves said at the time. ``A lot more. He's going to be the greatest thing that ever happened.''
Negotiations between Borgenicht and college officials have been gradual since then, said Stewart Gamage, vice president for public affairs, who would not confirm the $10 million figure. by CNB
