ROBERT GLOVER: FIRE SERVICE INSTRUCTOR

Rest easy, Virginia Beach. Robert Glover is looking out for you. In fact, even the governor says he's doing a great job.

Glover, a fire service paramedic and instructor with the Virginia Beach Fire Department, just won the prestigious Governor's Award to the Outstanding Prehospital Instructor in the state.

It's a great honor and well deserved, says Hedley E. Austin who nominated Glover (and who supervises Glover at Virginia Beach Fire Training). Thousands of career and volunteer fire and emergency medical students locally and in other parts of the nation as well as the Boy Scouts, Safe Kids Coalition and countless others have benefited from his work.

Full name: Robert Leon Glover Jr.

Hometown: Until recently it was Virginia Beach; now Chesapeake is my home.

What brought you to the Beach? The military. My parents' last duty assignment was in Virginia Beach. We transferred here in 1969. As a matter of fact, it was the day the astronauts walked on the moon.

Birthdate: Aug. 11, 1957.

Occupation: Fire service instructor, paramedic and part-time college professor.

Nickname: Rob.

Marital status: Happily married for nearly 15 years to my wife, Donna.

Children: One son, Bobby. He's a senior and the drum major at Kellam High School.

What is your idea of a perfect day off? Not having to do anything for anyone. Also the time to spend having a quiet dinner with my friends and family and possibly attending a cultural or community event.

Last smart thing you did: Transferred into the fire department.

Last dumb thing you did: Stopped going to the gym and running.

Favorite meal: Almost anything Italian.

Favorite movies: ``The Godfather'' series, ``Same Time Next Year,'' ``An American President,'' ``Bridges of Madison County.''

Favorite song: ``Hero'' by Mariah Carey.

Last book read: ``My American Journey'' by Colin Powell, ``After Dark'' by Peter Margolin, ``Rainmaker'' by John Gresham and ``Murderers'' by W.E.B. Griffin.

Hobbies: Music, cultural festivals, tennis and golf.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? To become more disciplined about physical fitness.

If you could change one thing about your spouse, what would it be? Nothing. You don't tamper with perfection.

Favorite restaurant: My favorite casual restaurant is the Outback Steakhouse. For more sumptuous cuisine, I enjoy Aldo's.

Your favorite night on the town: I enjoy the many cultural festivities offered in Tidewater. The ideal evening is to join a group of friends and family and visit a festival, enjoying the atmosphere, music and various cultural menus.

Favorite TV shows: ``E.R.'' ``60 Minutes,'' ``Home Improvement,'' ``NYPD Blue,'' and various sports programs.

Last vacation: Mystic, Conn. I went to Groton for my brother's Navy retirement ceremony.

Pets: None.

Worst job: Working on a concrete crew, tying steel rebar during the summer.

Of what achievements are you most proud? My family is the pride of my life. A close second would be perseverance to complete a formal education and the aptitude to apply what I learn to daily challenges and opportunities. Also, I am extremely proud of being a member of the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad and the Virginia Beach Fire Department. These organizations exemplify the meaning of professionalism, quality and dedication in public service.

What would you like as your epitaph? There is choice between two statements. The first one is ``If you are afraid to be lonely, don't try to be right'' written by Jules Bernard. The second is ``Doing what you like is freedom; liking what you do is happiness.'' Author unknown. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by STEVE EARLEY
