Dr. Japheth Edward Rawls Jr., 81, of 722 Jones St., died Dec. 19, 1995.
A native of Suffolk, he was a son of the late Emmaline Holland and Dr. Japheth Edward Rawls Sr. Dr. Rawls was a member of Suffolk Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and in many other church positions over the years. He served as a member of the board of Elon College for 47 years. He was a 1935 graduate of Elon College, attended Duke University and received his M.D. from Temple University Medical School. Dr. Rawls served an internship in Norfolk General, his residency at Cleveland Clinic Foundation and following World War II he joined the Lakeview Clinic, where he had a medical practice until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of numerous medical associations and a past president and member of the Suffolk Rotary Club from 1946 until the present. A World War II Navy veteran, Dr. Rawls served as a medical officer for the Marine Corps in the South Pacific from 1942-46.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Riddick Rawls; three sisters, Mary Sue Rawls Parker of Suffolk, Emmaline Rawls Bentley of Hopkinsville, Ky., Margaret Rawls Bullard of Mebane, N.C.; two brothers, Dr. Charles Holland Rawls of Suffolk and Dr. Harvey Pretlow Rawls of Virginia Beach; 25 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Suffolk Christian Church by Dr. Bruce A. Havens and Dr. Robert B. Marr. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N. Main St., Suffolk, Va. 23434, or to a charity of choice.
