SAILOR DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT

A Chesapeake man who was changing a tire on Interstate 564 West was killed about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday morning when another vehicle struck his car, state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said.

Benjamin J. Beckstine, 21, was driving a 1990 Toyota pickup when the front passenger tire went flat about one-quarter mile west of the Terminal Boulevard exit. He pulled off onto the shoulder and turned on his flashing hazard lights.

Beckstine was changing the tire when a 1989 Chevy Blazer, slowing for traffic, skidded off the right side of the road. The Blazer struck the rear of the Toyota, pinning Beckstine between his pickup and the guard rail.

Beckstine, who was assigned to the destroyer Caron, died about 15 minutes later at the scene, Van Dame said.

The driver of the Blazer, 20-year-old Robert T. Chilton, who is assigned to the amphibious assault ship Nassau, was charged with reckless driving.
