Canon Virginia chairman to retire by year's end

Canon Virginia Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Shin-ichiro Nagashima, the Japanese native who helped make his company one of the Peninsula's most influential businesses, announced he will retire at the end of the year. He has been with the company 29 years. His successor has not been named.

Nagashima, 65, isn't leaving the Peninsula. Instead, he will serve as community liaison, executive adviser and ``chairman emeritus'' for Canon Virginia. (Knight Ridder/Tribune) More jet room approved by Richmond airport

The Capital Region Airport Commission has endorsed plans by the private Richmond Jet Center to build a 23,000-square-foot hangar and 6,000-square-foot office building adjacent to the company's current building.

The $1.5 million hangar will hold up to 14 corporate jets, company President Jon Clarke said.

David L. Blackshear, the airport's executive director, predicted that Motorola Inc.'s planned $3 billion computer chip plant west of Richmond will spur demand. (Associated Press) Coal loadings in port up 8.1 million tons

Coal continues to surge through the port of Hampton Roads. The port's three coal terminals have dumped nearly 47.4 million tons of coal through November, up from 39.3 million tons last year, according to the Hampton Roads Maritime Association. November coal loadings rose 18.8 percent to nearly 4.6 million tons. Much of the growth so far in 1995 occurred at the two terminals in Newport News, Pier IX Terminal Co. and Dominion Terminal Associates. (Staff) Housing loans would be to married couples only

Virginia Housing Development Authority commissioners on Tuesday bowed to Gov. George F. Allen's wishes and proposed barring housing loans to homosexual or unmarried couples.

In June 1994, the commissioners eliminated the requirement that borrowers living together be related by blood, marriage or adoption.

Since then, Allen has appointed six new members to the 10-member board. A public hearing will be held Jan. 19 at VHDA headquarters in Richmond.(AP) > by CNB
