SPECKLED TROUT MAKE DAY WORTHWHILE IN THE SURF

Although water temperatures are fairly low along the Outer Banks, speckled trout continue to be landed in quantity from the surf.

Plenty of 4- to 5-pounders were taken by surfcasters along the beach south of Cape Point Monday. Action was also reported in the surf next to the Frisco Pier.

Anglers fishing several deep sloughs north of Ramp 4 on the north side of Oregon Inlet caught limits of speckled trout Tuesday. Most of the fish, weighing about 4 pounds, were taken on Mirrolures.

Speckled trout fishing was also great along the beach behind the Cape Hatteras lighthouse Tuesday. Mirrolures in colors 808 and 704 were the best producers.

The Oregon Inlet fishing center and Pirates Cove charter fleet remained at the dock.

A few commercial vessels fished off Hatteras on Monday, landing fair numbers of king mackerel.

Speckled trout should remain in the area as long as water temperatures remain above 45 degrees.

Water temperature at the Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 48 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
