DORIS J. HARDING

Doris Jerlene Harding, 62, of the 2600 block of Roanoke Ave., died Dec. 20, 1995, after a short illness.

She was a strings teacher for the Portsmouth public school system where she had worked for over 30 years. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Portsmouth where she was a choir member and member of the St. Maria Guild. Professional affiliations included National Association of Negro Musicians and the Tidewater Area Musicians. Social affiliations included the Portsmouth Chapter of Delicados Inc., Links, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. A special honor was cited in the nationally published book titled Black Women in American Bands and Orchestras. She received many awards and recognition for outstanding service to young people and other accomplishments.

She is survived by her husband, Cornelius E. Harding Jr.; daughter, Kimberly Harding of Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters, Margaret H. Lockard of Detroit, Mildred E. Henderson of New York City, Christine H. Elliott and Agnes Johnson, both of Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by a son, David C. Harding.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Jesse L. London in St. James Episcopal Church. Burial is in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The family will be at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the St. James Episcopal Church Music Fund.
