GODFREY WELLS STANCILL

Godfrey Wells Stancill, 71, of 620 Butler Ave., a retired publisher of the Suffolk News-Herald and former publisher of the Radford News-Journal, died Dec. 20, 1995.

A native of of Washington, N.C., he was the son of the late William Godfrey and Daisy Padgett Stancill. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and an officer of the U.S.S. Bunker Hill, having received his commission in the Naval ROTC at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he did his undergraduate study. Mr. Stancill was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served on the board and was former treasurer. He was past president of the Virginia Press Association, past chairman of the United Way in Suffolk and a former member of the Board of Visitors of Radford University. He was a member of the Suffolk Rotary Club and former member and past president of the Radford Rotary Club. He was a life member of the UNC Alumni Association and former president of the UNC Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was an Eagle Scout.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Harrill Stancill; four daughters, Diane Stancill Hall of Richmond, Nancy Stancill Norman of Charlotte, N.C, Melinda Stancill Poe of Virginia Beach, Jane Stancill Lawrence of Durham, N.C.; son, Steven Godfrey Stancill of Woodberry Forest; brother, William Edwin Stancill of Washington, N.C.; and five grandchildren, David R. Hall, Steven R. Hall, Jeffrey S. Norman, Andrew G. Stancill, Ella S. Stancill.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Main Street United Methodist Church by Dr. Alan Felumlee. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton, Tenn., by the Rev. Jerry Fleenor. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, Va. 23434, or to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
