BEACH STUDENTS PICKED TO PERFORM IN SCOTLAND

Twenty-nine students from the First Colonial High School drama department have been selected to perform in the Fringe Festival of the prestigious Edinburgh Fine Arts Festival in August.

The Virginia Beach group is one of 12 American high school theaters invited to attend the American High School Theatre Festival, part of the three-week festival in Scotland.

Virginia is the first state to have been represented twice in Edinburgh by high school performers. A Lynchburg troupe attended last year.

Directed by Nancy Curtis, the students of First Colonial's Patriot Playhouse will perform the drama ``Mother Hicks.''

That is, if they can raise the $3,000 per student needed to get there.

Curtis said the students are involved in fund-raising activities and are also seeking sponsorships. Payment is due in June.

The students were selected by a panel of collegiate theater professionals, Curtis said.

The Edinburgh festival is known around the world for drawing big names. The Fringe Festival features unknowns who perform around the clock in any location they can find, including playgrounds, churches, city parks and swimming pools.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a student or donating should contact Curtis at First Colonial High School, 496-6711, or on voice mail at 567-3126. by CNB
