Godfrey W. Stancill, retired publisher of the Suffolk News-Herald and a former president of the Virginia Press Association, died Wednesday. He was 71.
Stancill died of cancer at a Suffolk hospital.
He was the publisher of the newspaper from 1968 until he retired in 1980. He returned in 1990 as a guest columnist.
He was elected president of VPA in 1980.
Stancill began his newspaper career as an advertising salesman for the Elizabethton Star in Tennessee in 1948.
He earned a bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he was a former president of the Sigma Nu fraternity at the school. He was a Navy officer during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, four daughters, a son and a brother.
