MAN INJURED DURING APPARENT BURGLARY ATTEMPT

A city man was in critical condition Wednesday after falling at least 30 feet through a warehouse roof during an apparent burglary attempt, police reported.

Allen A. Fulcher Jr., 19, suffered severe head injuries Tuesday night when he landed on the concrete floor of the warehouse, police spokesman Larry Hill said. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The attempted burglary occurred at DunMar Moving Systems Storage Warehouse, in the 100 block of South Military Highway. The owner of the warehouse would not comment about the incident.

Police first responded to a burglar alarm at the warehouse at 9:30 p.m. They found nothing amiss and left.

``Officers went over there and everything looked intact,'' Hill said.

But shortly after 11 p.m., police received a call about an injured man inside the building. Police contacted the warehouse owner, returned to the site and discovered Fulcher on the floor.

Hill did not know how Fulcher, who has no permanent address, had broken through the roof. However, police said they do not think Fulcher was alone.

Investigators traced the call to a 7-Eleven store near the corner of Newtown Road and Curlew Drive. Police recovered surveillance videotape from the store that showed a man and a woman asking how to contact Norfolk police.

Police are searching for the man and woman, who may be connected with the attempted burglary, Hill said.

The man was described as white, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, and 150 pounds, with a beard, moustache and reddish-blond hair. He was wearing a blue coat.

The woman was described as white, 5 feet 5 inches tall, 130 to 140 pounds, with shoulder-length black hair. She was dressed all in black and was wearing a black coat.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Line at 664-4040. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
