RICHARD J. NELSON SR.

Richard Jerome Nelson Sr., senior chief boatswains mate, U.S. Navy retired, 72, of the 1700 block of Hancock Ave., died Dec. 21, 1995, in his home after a brief illness.

He was born July 1, 1923, in Bayonne, N.J., and had lived in Norfolk for the last 47 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry N. and Florence A. Nelson; his youngest son, Thomas Leif Nelson; two brothers, James Nelson and Thomas H. Nelson; three sisters, Muriel Dembowski, Florence Kosakowski and Mary Lou Nelson.

Senior Chief Nelson retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of faithful service. He served in the Pacific during World War II, Korea and Vietnam Wars. He was a past chief master at arms of the Norfolk Naval Air Station and had been craft master of various Navy Support Craft while stationed in Norfolk. He was a member of and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Trinity Lutheran Church; member of Fleet Reserve Association, Branch (NU)60; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post (NU)9382 and Doric Lodge (NU)44, A.F. & A.M. He had been active with Pack 13 and Troop 13, BSA, in Norfolk during earlier years with his sons.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene B. Nelson; two sons, Richard J. Nelson Jr. and his wife, Marsue, of Suffolk, John R. Nelson and his wife, Karen, of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, Richard H. Nelson, Stephanie A. Nelson, Melissa A. Nelson, Dawn M. Nelson, Eric T. Nelson and Jennifer A. Nelson; and one great-granddaughter, Jordan N. Nelson; three brothers, Henry N. Nelson Jr., Herbert T. Nelson and John R. Nelson; and 19 nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 1995, in Trinity Lutheran Church, 6001 Granby St., Norfolk, by Pastor Daniel H. Quiram. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 1995. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
