BRANCH WANTS SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS MOVED

Council member Linwood O. Branch wants to shift the dates of School Board elections so they don't fall at the same time as council races.

Branch said it is too confusing for the public to have four or five council seats and the same number of School Board seats up for grabs at the same time. In May 1996, five council seats will be up for grabs and, because of resignations, seven board seats; meaning 25 or more people will be campaigning at the same time.

Branch suggested that, beginning in 1998, the School Board elections be held in November, with the council elections to stay in May.

The council will hold a public hearing on the proposal Jan. 2.
