WHILE MOST high school students are enjoying a few days respite from classes over the holidays, it will be business as usual for many area boys basketball teams.
Seven teams - Nansemond River, Lakeland, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Southampton, Franklin, Smithfield and Windsor - will play in tournaments this week.
The best potential matchup could come at Lakeland's Pepsi Christmas Challenge, where Nansemond River will meet the Cavaliers if both win first-round games.
``When we play records don't matter,'' said Nansemond River coach Spencer Mayfield. ``We've been fighting each other for five years and that's how it goes with crosstown rivals.''
Added Lakeland coach John Fuller, ``The fewer times we have to play each other, we're both better off.''
The Warriors may have the most at stake in the tournament. They're trying to bounce back after suffering two losses in the Tidewater Classic last week.
``We stunk up the place. We didn't play well and we got our rear sides bounced,'' said Mayfield, whose team lost only two games all of last year in winning the Group AA state championship. ``The coaches sat down and we brainstormed to try to figure out what was wrong. Then we talked to the kids to try to point some things out to get the problems solved.''
Nansemond River appeared problem-free Tuesday, when it handed previously unbeaten Bruton a 95-60 loss.
``One game can't tell the story of whether you're back,'' Mayfield said. ``There are a lot more games to go, but we're back to playing as a team.''
Here's a look at each holiday tournament with the teams' records through Wednesday:

Lakeland has four players - Brian Baker, Amon Cross, John Ricks and Damon Tillery - who average in double figures. Perez Bottoms (18.6) and Andruy Jones (15.0) lead Wilson and Norview, respectively. Two wins could be a huge lift in the Suffolk schools' last nonconference games.
