Hazel B. Dickens, 77, of the 3500 block of Poppy Crescent, died Dec. 22, 1995, in Bayside Hospital.
She was born in Fancy Gap, Va., and was a police officer for the City of Norfolk. She was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church, Norfolk. She was a member of Community Lodge (NU)3 F.O.P. and Monticello Charter Chapter of the American Business Women Association and was past president of the year 1977. She was a CPL and detective in the check squad. She was one of the first women to the join the force. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary E. Weddle and Jesse M. Edwards.
Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Smathers and her husband, Thomas Smathers of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jessie Hodge of Mount Airy, N.C.; two brothers, James Edwards and Woltz Edwards from Fancy Gap, Va.; two grandchildren, Christopher Thomas Smathers and Jamie Lynn Smathers who reside in Virginia Beach.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Lamar Sentell in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
