SCHOOL ADOPTS 3 NEW SERVICE PROJECTS

Smithfield High School students, faculty and staff expanded the school's community outreach program in December with three service projects, Principal Donald Alvey has announced.

The Beta Club sponsored the eighth annual SHS Packer Christmas Tree project. The tree was displayed in the school's media center and featured 60 piglet ornaments, each inscribed with the name and Christmas wish of a needy local child. Students and faculty members selected names from the tree, bought gifts and placed them under the tree. All 60 children will receive gifts with a total value of more than $1,200.

Ralph Freeman, Joyce Kennedy and Mary Barlow sponsor the Beta Club.

The SCA sponsored a canned-food competition during the second week of December in each first block class. The classes collected a total of 1,550 cans of food for needy Isle of Wight families as identified by the county's Social Services Department. Cecelia Wilson's advanced-placement English class won a pizza party for collecting 454 cans. Barbara Bradley's honors English 10 class finished second with 312 cans. The students enjoyed the competition, but the real winners are the families who received about $750 worth of non-perishable food.

The SCA also sponsored a charity volleyball game between volunteers from the junior and senior classes. More than $500 was raised from admissions to buy toys and supplies for the Isle of Wight Head Start program, the Geneive Shelter and three needy county families. The SCA sponsor is Susan Weaver.

In all, the faculty and students of Smithfield donated more than $2,500 of food, gifts and toys during December to those in need in Isle of Wight. by CNB
