I agree with John Maywood's opinion on the segment of the population that abuses the welfare system (letter, Dec. 12). I think that problem is being taken care of slowly but surely.
As to why Mr. Maywood is a ``slave'' to welfare families: The fathers of the children are the first place to question. If support payments were being made, many of the services provided by welfare would not be necessary! Instead of blaming children who receive the free lunches and health care, look to the adults who brought them into this world!
The welfare system is in place for temporary assistance during hard times and should strictly be used as such.
If ``welfare mothers'' are going to school assisted by the state, I dare say the result will take them beyond a minimum-wage job and little or no education. They will join our ranks and pay taxes along with us to help educate the next welfare mother to get on her feet and be self-supporting. If you feed a person for a day, she eats; if you teach her to plant a garden, she becomes self-sufficient.
