MAURY DOMINATES ALL-STAR SELECTIONS

TO NO SURPRISE, Maury won its 16th consecutive Eastern District field hockey crown with a perfect 8-0-0 record this fall. And to no surprise, the Commodores once again dominated the postseason all-star team selected by league coaches.

Topping the list were Maury senior Katie Roman and Lake Taylor senior Stephanie Lynch, who were named co-players of the year.

Roman, a forward, scored five goals and assisted on seven of the Commodores' scores. Lynch led the district in scoring with 15 goals while assisting on seven.

Also named to the first team from Maury were seniors Catherine Stanfield and Megan Kinnear and juniors Amy Mayer and Janet Blevins.

Mayer led the Commodores in scoring with 11 goals. Stanfield was second in scoring with six goals. Kinnear netted three and assisted on three and Blevins notched one goal on the season.

Lake Taylor, the district runner-up and tournament champion, earned its first trip to the region playoffs with a 5-3-0 record.

In addition to Lynch, Erin Harkins, Erin Finn and Christina Tarr earned first team honors for the Titans.

Finn, a sophomore keeper, had 166 saves. Tarr was second on the team in scoring with four goals while Harkins chipped in three.

Booker T. Washington, the league's third place finisher at 4-4-0, captured three spots on the first team, as did fourth-place Granby.

Earning honors for the Bookers were juniors Leah Buhler (2 goals), Sherika Sadler (6 goals, 4 assists) and Jannat Scoon (3 goals, 4 assists). Sadler and Scoon were both promoted to the first team after earning second team honors last season.

Granby seniors Nicki Reese (3 goals), Rachel Gerloff (2 goals, 3 assists) and Erin Justus (1 goal, 2 assists) were also named to the first team.

Norview's Heather Emerick, a sophomore keeper who notched 259 saves, rounded out the first team selections.

FIVE BOOKER T. players headed up the second team: Cherie Sowell, Andrea Thomas, Robin Finnell, Tarrah Turner and Tara Lapeza.

Second-team selections from Maury included Beth Nottingham, Melanie Mushell and Colleen Maloney. Angela Riedel, Sue Pulongbarit and Naida Koretsch represented Lake Taylor.

Lakeisha Phelps and Tiffany Harvey were Norview choices while Denise Fowble and Laura Price were selected from Granby.

Earning honorable mention were Tiffany Goodman, Leslie Evidente and Angie Copeland of Booker T.; Sarah Monroe and Lisa Dale of Maury; Keoma Maker and Carol Morrow of Norview; Kelly Mawson of Lake Taylor and Gina Frazier of Granby. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
