Newtion Asbery Chapman, 85, husband of Captoria Lawrence Chapman, died Dec. 26, 1995.
A native of Isle of Wight County, he retired from Newport News Shipyard after 28 years. He was a member of Campbell's Chapel A.M.E. Church for 70 years.
He is survived by his wife, Captoria Lawrence Chapman; three daughters, Captoria C. Shannon of Portsmouth, Loretta Jane Newby of Washington, D.C., Delois C. Newby of Carrollton; two sons, Otis Batten, of Smithfield, Curtis A. Chapman Sr. of Smithfield; four sisters, Martha Grant and Carrie Charity, both of Smithfield, Ora Clinton of Baltimore, and Cathryn Fuellen of Philadelphia, Pa.; brother, Willie Chapman of Smithfield; 27 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Campbell's Chapel A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Vernon L. Ricks Sr. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in church at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Pretlow and Chapman Funeral Home, Smithfield, is in charge of the arrangements.
