PORTSMOUTH SUMMIT TO LOOK AT CRIME AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Crime-fighting strategies and how to improve the city's quality of life will be the topic of a Jan. 20 conference that will bring together the Police Department, City Council and civic groups.

The conference, called a ``citywide crime summit,'' will be held from 1 to 6:30 p.m. at Hunt-Mapp Middle School, 3701 Willett Drive. The public is invited. Transportation, child care, door prizes and a meal will be provided.

``The purpose of this event is to reach as many citizens as possible through a grassroots effort,'' a police press release said.

``The summit will seek ideas and input to confront the current crime and quality-of-life issues within our city.''

The conference will also provide information about Portsmouth's community policing efforts.

After the presentation, participants will break into smaller groups to brainstorm strategies to create a workable and effective plan between police, citizens and local governmental agencies.
