Delta cuts fares 30 to 50 percent

Delta Air Lines said it would cut advance-purchase North American fares by 30 to 50 percent for trips in January and February. Tickets must be purchased by Jan. 10 and at least seven days before the trip to take advantage of the discounts, which were expected to be matched by Delta's competitors. The discounts apply to trips between Jan. 2 and Feb. 29. Promotions this time of year are common as airlines try to give a boost to what are typically some of the slowest travel months. Some of the discounts include Atlanta to Washington, D.C., $164 round trip off-peak, compared with $328; Atlanta to San Francisco, $505, compared with $721 and Cincinnati to Honolulu, $557, compared with $920. (AP) Astro-Lounger recliner chairs recalled

One-thousand recliner armchairs are being recalled because the space between the chair's seat and leg rest is big enough to trap a child's head. The chairs made by Astro-Lounger Furniture Manufacturing Co. do not meet voluntary industry guidelines that specify a space no bigger than 5 inches. The Astro-Lounger chairs have a space 6 3/4 inches. The chairs have an ``Astro-Lounger'' label on the leg rest and were sold through furniture stores from 1990 to January 1994 for about $99. Consumers owning the chairs should call the company, at (800) 700-6945, to receive a free crossbar reducing the space. Under a recall agreement with the government, a company can replace, refund or repair a product. (AP) Powerline for Motorola upsets Henrico residents

Some Henrico County homeowners are upset about plans to run a 230-kilovolt power line from a Virginia Power substation to a new Motorola semiconductor plant in Goochland County. Residents of four subdivisions fear the power line will affect property values. They also are upset that no one consulted them during the planning stage. Virginia Power says it has until mid-1997 to complete the line, so it didn't have time to follow its usual procedure of holding workshops for residents. The utility's application for the proposed line is pending before the State Corporation Commission. A hearing is set for Jan. 18. (AP) by CNB
