``Murder rates drop in 3 cities'' (news, Dec. 18) reports the good news that crime rates have declined locally as well as nationally. Officials at various levels offered several explanations for the drop, but no one seems to have hit upon the most logical reason: More criminals are in jail serving longer sentences.
Felons in record numbers are in prison or under court supervision. The facts support the wisdom of Governor Allen's push for stiffer enforcement of the law.
