I have been in the fishing business for more than 20 years and have held both commercial and charter licenses. I did not renew my commercial license in 1995 because of increasing government regulations and decreasing market prices, but I did read your four-part, bazillion-word special report, ``Dividing the Waters.'' I was disappointed and shocked that you barely mentioned the most-important issue - protecting the natural resource: fish.
If we don't abandon the my-grandfather-did-it,-my-father-did-it,-so-it's-OK-if-I-do-it mentality and start putting the protection of our natural resources up front, our grandchildren are going to have to learn about 1-pound spots from history books.
When was the last time you saw a 4-pound croaker? Why do we have fish and clam farms? Are blue-crab farms next?
C'mon, Virginian-Pilot, wake up!
