BRYANT M. CUMMINGS

Bryant McFerrin Cummings, 78, of the 800 block of Shell Road, a retired minister, died Dec. 27, 1995, in his residence.

Mr. Cummings was born in Owensboro, Ky. He was the son of Anna and Logan Cummings. He was a graduate of Owensboro High School, Carson-Newman College, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942-1946 and was honorably discharged with the rank of major. His religious experiences included: education director of Seevers Street Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas, and First Baptist of Temple, Oklahoma; music-education director of First Baptist Church, Brunswick, Ga.; president, Georgia Religious Education Association; education director, First Baptist Church, Corsicanna, Texas; education director, First Baptist Church, Brookhaven, Miss.; education director, First Baptist Church, Jackson, Miss. The next 25 years he served as the State Sunday school director for the Mississippi Convention Board and Church Architectural Consultant. He also served as president of Southwestern Religious Education Association.

Mr. Cummings retired in 1983 and served as interim minister of Religious Education First Baptist Church, Jackson, Miss., and minister to Senior Adults, First Baptist Church, Norfolk. He also served as interim pastor to Grassfield Baptist Church, Chesapeake. In Tidewater he was active in Interfaith AIDS Council of Tidewater. He was currently a volunteer with Full Circle AIDS Hospice and a member of the Portsmouth Music Study Club.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Margaret Ann Cuthriell Cummings of Chesapeake; a son, Craig Cummings of Meridian, Miss.; a daughter, Ann Cummings of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Amy and Nicholas Cummings of Meridian; a sister, Bettie Anne Cook of Evansville, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 1995, at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, by the Rev. Bron Forrester, the Rev. John Dean, both of Tidewater, Va., and the Rev. Keener Pharr of Signal Mountain, Tenn. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Eagle Club, Carson-Newman College, C-N Box 71988, Jefferson City, Tenn. 37760. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
