The driver of a tractor-trailer truck was killed Thursday when the vehicle overturned while maneuvering an on-ramp to Interstate 664, state police said.
The driver was identified as William Chamblis, 64, of Suffolk. His street address was not immediately available.
The accident happened about 3:15 p.m., as the truck left Portsmouth Boulevard and attempted to get on northbound I-664.
State police said Chamblis was ejected from the tractor when the truck overturned.
The truck, owned by Maersk Line Agency, was loaded with 23 tons of frozen foods destined for overseas shipment.
The on-ramp remained closed for several hours while the accident scene was cleaned up.
A state police motor carrier safety team is investigating the accident.
The truck, owned by American Roads Lines of Chesapeake, was loaded with 23 tons of frozen meat for Hardee's destined for overseas shipment.
The on-ramp remained closed until 9:30 p.m.
A state police motor carrier safety team is investigating the accident.
But police believe the truck was going too fast - although not in excess of the posted speed limit - considering the road and its heavy load.
