Young harbor seals have been reported along Outer Banks beaches this winter. Officials at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island recommend they be left alone.
Although they may appear injured or sick, said Rhett B. White, director of the aquarium, they probably are young and tired from traveling from their normal range in New England.
``They must come ashore to rest,'' White said. They are protected by federal laws and can bite, he warned. If the seals have cuts or are tangled in nets, White said, spotters should call the aquarium at 919-473-3494. by CNB
