Friendly Ice Cream Corp. on Friday recalled one batch of Friendly's Chocolate Fudge Brownie Yogurt and one batch of Purely Chocolate Yogurt because of potential bacterial contamination.
The company said the frozen yogurt recall would affect Virginia and 14 other states: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The company said it was recalling about 30,000 half-gallon containers, sold in restaurants, convenience stores and supermarkets.
Company spokeswoman Vivian Brooks said about half of the containers had been located by Friday evening.
The yogurt batches were produced in the company's plant in Troy, Ohio. The bacteria, listeria monocytogenes, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in small children, frail or elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems, the company said.
In healthy adults, it may cause a flu-like illness. No complaints or reports of illness have been received yet, the company said.
The Chocolate Fudge Brownie Yogurt, bearing a code number of 00869, and Purely Chocolate Yogurt, bearing a code number of 00980, bore a date of 96DEC01.
Anybody with these containers can return them to the place they were purchased for full refund, the company said.
If people are diagnosed with the bacterial illness, the company said, they should call the company's consumer hot line at (413) 543-2400.
