STITH, HUGHES ARE FALL SPORTS AWARD WINNERS

Shyrone Stith of Western Branch and Adrian Hughes of Great Bridge each topped the list of postseason award winners as their respective schools announced the fall sports most valuable players.

Stith, a 5-foot-8, 185-pound senior running back, led the Bruins football team to a 7-3 finish with 670 yards on 87 carries.

He also made six catches for 61 yards. Along with his most valuable player award, Stith was also named his team's top offensive player.

Adrian Hughes, a 5-7, 155-pound senior halfback, also earned most valuable honors in two categories. Hughes, who rushed 138 times for 622 yards, was the Wildcats' overall most valuable player and best offensive player.

FOOTBALL: Other Great Bridge football players earning most valuable player awards were Bryan Miles (offensive line), Michael Cuddyer (offensive back), Daniel Ross (defensive lineman), Robert Ziegenfuss (defensive back), and Meredith Corprew (defense). Nevin Mast took the D.C. Elry Award.

For Western Branch, Mark Edmonson captured the leadership award; Jason Parker was named rookie of the year; Idris Sherard, most improved; Daniel Dussia had the best kicking game; and top defensive honors went to Lorenzo Ferguson.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Western Branch, which finished the regular season undefeated, named Katie MacPhail, Jaci Morris and Amanda Adkins its most valuable players, while Tiffani Sykes was named the team's most improved player. Jill Ferguson took MVP honors at Great Bridge.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Western Branch's Andrew Powers was the team's top server at 96 percent; Eric Steinfort, the best passer; Josh Brinkley made the squad's most kills with 122; Will Shoaf was named most improved. Mark Higginbotham earned top honors at Great Bridge.

GIRLS TENNIS: Ciara Lascano and Lindsay Oldham earned sportsmanship awards for Western Branch; Mary Beth Tinkham took the Coach's Award and Laura Whitehurst was most improved. Kim Burnop was the Great Bridge Wildcats' top player.

GOLF: Most valuable for Western Branch was Ryder Raldoph, while Gabe Fritz captured the most improved award and Matt Renfrow earned the leadership award. Matt Peron was Great Bridge's top golfer.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Emily Thomas and Angela Cusick were outstanding performers for Western Branch and Cheri Newman was most improved. Tracy O'Neal was Great Bridge's top runner.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Eric Adams earned honors for Great Bridge while William McGlaughon took top honors at Western Branch. Robert Birsch was named outstanding performer for the Bruins and Damon Brindle was most improved.

CHEERING: Great Bridge's Meredith Georges earned honors as football's top cheerleader while Aislyn Joyner was named cross country and volleyball's best cheerer. ILLUSTRATION: HIGH SCHOOLS - MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS
